This is actually a form of meditation that I developed, and still am developing for myself. The core idea of this technique is to simply understand what pain is, and understand what everything we perceive is. They are all just messages sent to the brain, in five different formats of smell, taste, sight, feeling, and sound. To stop the feeling of pain, you have to look at its root, and identify that it is simply a message from your nerves to your brain. From there, it is instinct that tells us to be unhappy with what we are feeling. It is instinct which tells a young child to cry when they scratch their knee, or an adult to curse when they cut themselves. But truly, as a sentient species, we have the ability to go beyond instinct, if we try.

First, the next time you feel pain, acknowledge that it is a message. Thank your body, in a way, for delivering this message. Identify what it is that is hurting you, and mentally tell your body that you got the message. Do not think This hurts! but instead think I am hurt. Know that all the pain that you are feeling is just information; it is your body letting you know, in the most primitive way, that you are hurt and need to change something in order to be fine again. Simply process it, but do not think of it as painful.

The second part to this is a key part. You have to deal with your pain. You cant put the blender on HIGH and stick your hand in, using this method to not feel the pain. You have to know that you are in pain, that you are hurt, and need to, in the quickest way possible, stop what is hurting you. That is the reason we experience pain: it gives us motivation to stop it. Take away that motivation and you still have the need to stop whatever is damaging you.

This method works perfectly when you bang your head, or step on your toe, or any of those other common pains. First, apply this technique, and then check if you are bleeding or hurt in any way. Usually you aren't severely hurt in these occurrences, and thus the pain is worthless and unnecessary.

There are some types of pain I have found that are not relieved by this technique. As far as Ive found, they are really intense pain, some levels of hunger, breath deprivation, and extreme heat. However, I have found it works for times when hunger feels like physical pain, or for most levels of cold. This is not to say that this will be true of everyone; nor is it to say that I will never be able to overcome these types of pain, with enough advancement. Challenge yourself to find if you can use this method to relieve whichever types dont work for you, if there are any.

Before you decide to start to use this technique, be warned. This technique works for all sensations really, not just pain. If you become too enveloped in this technique you could lose even feelings of pleasure. A friend of mine, during a period in which he meditated frequently, seemed to lose his varying emotions, including love. You must be careful when using this method, and do not over do it.
